The mid-afternoon crowd at the Festival Shell opted for comfort, rather than a good view. Although the view was obscured, the audience enjoyed listening to the Tarnished Six from under the shade of one of the larger trees on the Old Main lawn.

Curved beds sweep around the Nittany Lion Inn and beneath the trees. Because daffodils bloom before the trees have foliage, most gardeners agree that planting the bulbs in shady spots is fine.

A diseased tree near the Hintz Family Alumni Center -- thought to be the oldest elm tree on Penn State's University Park campus -- had to be removed recently. The elm is believed to have been more than 125 years old, and was one that former Penn State President Milton Eisenhower and his brother, U.S. President Dwight D. Eisenhower, used as a backdrop both for official portraits and informal photographs.

A large branch fell from an elm near the campus Peace Gardens. The Office of Physical Plant has asked employees to be very mindful of the additional weight from the ice straining branches and to avoid walking under trees until the ice melts. Several areas of the campus have been cordoned off due to condition of tree limbs.

Penn State arborists discovered a crack forming in one of the twin elm trees that grace the front of Old Main on Penn State's University Park campus recently, and have been working to repair it. Taking advantage of unseasonably warm weather on Monday and Tuesday of this week (March 1 and 2), Drew Beben and Corby Fetterolf made their way up the tree to shore up the trunk and branches. Here, Beben examines the crack.
